The Ameerul-Mu’mineen in Hadith of this Era

Shaikh al-Ubailaan said, “… and this methodology which the scholars, may Allaah have mercy on them, have determined [concerning hadith] and [also] which the people of knowledge are upon concerning hadith is what the Ameerul-Mu’mineen in hadith of this age [i.e., al-Albaani] is upon, for he is the reviver of [both] the Science of Hadith and the Sunnah in this time—as the scholars of this age have stated openly—yet he did not bring anything new [i.e., unfounded], additionally he didn’t accept being a blind follower of anyone else in a field of knowledge to which he had devoted the majority of his life, and Allaah granted him things in that field which He didn’t grant others, and his goal in it was to aid the Sunnah, he didn’t busy himself with it in order to make a particular madhhab triumph, or to seek the dunyaa, in fact, he split with his father when his father gave him the choice to agree with him in something he was opposing the Sunnah in or to part ways, so he chose to part ways, saying to his father, ‘Give me three days in which I can seek Allaah’s Guidance in this matter [istikhaarah],’—and at that time he had no worldly possessions, Shaikh [al-Albaani] told me this himself, may Allaah grant him a place in the highest Firdous and raise his rank among the rightly guided.

So the Shaikh spent his entire life in this struggle, he didn’t seek knowledge in order to live in the lap of luxury, or to gain fame and the people’s praise—rather his concern was to spread the Sunnah, whoever was pleased with that then so be it and whoever raged against it, then so be it.

And our Shaikh, the Abstemious, the ’Allaamah, the Haafidh, Abdullah ibn Muhammad ad-Daweesh, may Allaah have mercy on him, spoke the truth when he said about Shaikh al-Albaani, ‘For centuries no one has come forth in the Science of Hadith like Shaikh Naasir in the copiousness of his works, and his precision in checking.’

And no-one recognises the merit of the people of excellence apart from [other] people of excellence, yet despite that we do not claim that the Shaikh couldn’t make a mistake when declaring something to be authentic or weak, this wasn’t the case and nor will it be with others.

At the same time we do not accept and nor are we pleased with his reputation being tarnished, for attacking him and others like him is to attack the Sunnah, and the claim that his methodology opposes that of the earlier hadith scholars is a disparagement of the Shaikh, no-one who can grasp the results of making such a statement on the Sunnah and its people in this time and after it would say such a thing.”

Al-’Abbaad: “Al-Albaani in Our Time is Like [Imaam] Ahmad in His.”

The ’Allaamah, the Muhaddith of Medinah, the Shaikh ’Abdul-Muhsin al-’Abbaad, may Allaah the Most High protect him, said, “Al-Albaani in our time is like [Imaam] Ahmad in his.”

Shaikh Muhammad ’Ataa-Ullaah Haneef About Al-Albaani, “He is The Peerless Scholar of This Time … He is Our Blessed Teacher.”

Shaikh Muhammad ’Ataa-Ullaah Haneef gave Shaikh al-Albaani some gifts in the form of books that he had checked, and on them he had written:

“A gift in appreciation of, and sincerely for, the Shaikh, the Ustaadh, the verifier of this age, the peerless scholar of his time, the Shaikh, Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah protect and guard him.

From someone who is weak, is your servant [khaadim] [i.e., is at your service] and who loves you for the sake of Allaah, Abut-Tayyib Muhammad ’Ataa-Ullaah Haneef al-Ghujiyaani, al-Athari, resident of Lahore.’

And he gave him a book called, ‘Minhaajus-Sunnah fi Naqd Kalaam ash-Shee’ah wal-Qadariyyah,’ and on it he wrote:

“A gift to His Eminence, the ’Allaamah, the major Muhaddith, the Shaikh, Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah the Most High protect him.

From his brother for the sake of Allaah, Muhammad ’Ataa-Ullaah Haneef.
Head of Al-Maktabah as-Salafiyyah,
Shish Mahal Road,
Lahore,
Pakistan.

And he used to describe Shaikh al-Albaani as, “Our blessed teacher.”

’Uthaimeen: “We Don’t Know of Anyone Who Matches Al-Albaani in This Age of Ours.”

Shaikh ’Uthaimeen said, “Al-Albaani is a man from Ahlus-Sunnah, may Allaah have mercy on him, a defender of the Sunnah, an Imaam in Hadith—we don’t know of anyone who matches him in this age of ours.”

Shaikh ’Abdul-Kareem al-Khudair on Al-Albaani Being One of the Major Scholars of the Ummah

Shaikh ’Abdul-Kareem al-Khudair, may Allaah protect him, said, “And for that reason Al-Dhahabi came, Ibn Hajar came, Al-Haafidh al-’Iraaqi came, Abu Zur’ah ibn al-Haafidh al-’Iraaqi came, major scholars who graded hadith to be authentic and weak, good was placed at their hands [continuing] up to this era of ours—until the [line of] Huffaadh and Imaams was completed with al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on him.”

Al-Imaam al-Albaani, Shaikhul-Islaam wa Imaamu Ahlis-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah fi ’Uyoon A’laam al-’Ulamaa wa Fuhool al-Udabaa, p. 234.

Shaikh ’Abdul-Kareem al-Khudair About Al-Albaani: “He is The Imaam and Reviver of The Sunnah.”

Shaikh ’Abdul-Kareem al-Khudair, may Allaah protect him, was asked, “What is your opinion about the checkings of the muhaddith Al-Albaani?”

So he answered, “The Shaikh, may Allaah have mercy on him, is above what is said about him, and if we were to mention his virtues, even if it took a long time, even if it took hours, we would not have covered anything in terms of what he did in aiding the Sunnahfor he is the Imaam and Reviver of the Sunnah—and the Sunnah was not known in this manner except through him, may Allaah the Most High have mercy on him.”

Shaikh Abdul-Qaadir as-Sindhi Staunchly Defending Shaikh al-Albaani Against the Person who was the Prime Reason for Al-Albaani Leaving Medinah

“Dr. Falaah Ismail Mundakar said, ‘We used to study with our Shaikh, Shaikh Abdul-Qaadir Habeebullaah as-Sindhi, and he was from the major scholars, he used to teach us, ‘Nukhbatul-Fikr,’ in the Haram [of Medinah] and the people used to want to devour his speech and explanations of mustalah, the science of hadith and the narrators, it being so sweet. The Shaikh had moved from a house which was close to one that was far, and I had a car but he didn’t … so it was an opportunity for me to take him to his house. We left the Haram and stood there waiting while the brothers left to go and bring the car close to the Gate of Umar since it was next to the street.

Then one of the Shaikhs and judges came, and there is no harm in naming him, it was Atiyyah Muhammad Saalim, he came—and he was a judge who lived and was connected to Medinah, he came and gave a very warm salaam to the Shaikh and I gave him salaam [too].

He said [to Shaikh Abdul-Qaadir], ‘O Shaikh! Where is the treatise? Where is the book? Fear Allaah! Why are you hiding knowledge?! I want to print it, I will print it at my own personal cost, give me the book! Bring it out! Produce the knowledge and do not hide it.’

Shaikh Atiyyah was a judge, and all of the Shaikhs were apprehensive of the judges because they always sit with the princes and the government.

Shaikh Abdul-Qaadir started to excuse himself saying, ‘Wallaahi, I will soon search … I don’t know where I put it … I will search for it amongst my papers …’

Shaikh Atiyyah left and [then] Shaikh Abdul-Qaadir said to me, ‘Ahhh! Do you know what he wants?’

I said, ‘No, Wallaahi O Shaikh, I don’t know.’

He said, ‘Did you see him?’

I said, ‘Yes, I saw him.’

He said, ‘However many souls he had … even if he had a hundred souls and dropped right here and one soul after the other left him … the souls left him and he died—I will not give him the book!’

I said, ‘O Shaikh, what is this book?’

He said, ‘O Shaikh, they were some words that I had written to my brother, my beloved, Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani where I answered him in some issues, he [i.e., Shaikh Atiyyah] came while I was writing and he saw it with me in the library and from that day on he’s been after me.’

Then Shaikh Abdul-Qaadir said to me, ‘By Allaah, if he were to die, and then be brought back to life, and then die and be brought back to life [again]—I will not give him the book, I will never distribute it.’

I said to him, ‘Why, O Shaikh of ours?’

He said, ‘Because he wants to quench his rage! By Allaah, he doesn’t want it as a matter of knowledge between us and our Shaikh [al-Albaani], if he wanted it for the sake of knowledge and to sincerely advise, it would’ve happened.’

[Then] he said to me, ‘Do you know that he is the reason that the Shaikh [i.e., al-Albaani] had to leave Madinah or don’t you know that?’

I said, ‘Wallaahi, I had heard.’

He said, ‘He is the reason, the prime reason that Shaikh al-Albaani was made to leave Madinah—I’m going to give it to him?!’

I said, ‘No, and may Allaah reward you with good, don’t give it to him!’'”

Al-Imaam al-Albaani, Shaikhul-Islaam wa Imaamu Ahlis-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah fi ’Uyoon A’laam al-’Ulamaa wa Fuhool al-Udabaa, pp. 118-120.

Al-‘Abbaad, “The One who Abuses al-Albaani Has no Intellect.”

Questioner:
This person says, ‘O Shaikh of ours, may Allaah protect you, there are some who attack Shaikh al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on him, and accuse him of having a corrupt ’aqidah, in fact, they describe him as someone whose ’aqidah is no different than that of the polytheists, what is your Eminence’s opinion about these statements?

Al-’Abbaad: The Prophet said, “Whosoever gives me a guarantee to safeguard what is between his jaws and what is between his legs, I shall guarantee him Paradise,” that which is between his jaws is the tongue. Likewise when the Prophet mentioned the forms of good in his advice to Mu’aadh ibn Jabal, he said, “Shall I not tell you of the foundation of all of that?” I said, “Yes, O Messenger of Allaah.” So he took hold of his tongue and said, “Restrain this.” I said, “O Prophet of Allaah, will we be taken to account for what we say with it?” He ﷺ said, “May your mother be bereaved of you, O Mu’aadh! Is there anything that throws people into the Hellfire upon their faces—or: on their noses—except the harvests of their tongues?”

And it is known that backbiting is forbidden, but backbiting the scholars through whom Allaah has benefitted the people and through whom much good has come about in terms of spreading knowledge and clarifying it, this is even more severe and greater than backbiting other people.

And there is no doubt that the person who says such things has wronged himself, and the harm goes back on himself, the Prophet explained who the bankrupt person in the Hereafter is when, in an authentic hadith, he said to his Companions, “Do you know who the bankrupt person is?” They replied, “The bankrupt among us is one who has neither money with him nor any property,” they thought he was asking about the bankrupt people of the world so they said, “The bankrupt among us is one who has neither money with him nor any property,” but he ﷺ was asking about the bankrupt person of the Hereafter, and such a person is the one who is truly bankrupt, i.e., a bankrupt person in the world is [indeed] bankrupt but the one who is even more bankrupt than him is the one of the Hereafter.

So who is the bankrupt person of the Hereafter? He said, “The real bankrupt of my Ummah would be he who will come on the Day of Resurrection with prayer, fasting and charity, (but he will find himself bankrupt on that day as he will have exhausted the good deeds) because he reviled others, brought calumny against others, unlawfully devoured the wealth of others, shed the blood of others and beat others. So his good deeds would be credited to the account of those (who suffered at his hand). If his good deeds fall short to clear the account, their sins would be entered in his account and he would be thrown in the Fire.”

So this person who made such evil, ugly statements about this lofty scholar has only wronged and harmed himself—and none of that hurts Shaikh al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on him, its harm goes back to the one who made the statements, it will not reach al-Albaani, al-Albaani will receive good and righteous deeds because of this crime against him from that person who has set loose his tongue against him by making statements such as these which do not befit or emanate from a person who has any intellect.

Shaikh Badee’ud-Deen as-Sindhi ar-Raashidi About Shaikh al-Albaani

Abu Muhammad Badee’ud-Deen Shaah ibn as-Sayyid Shaah Ihsaanullaah ibn Rushdullaah Shaah ibn Rasheedud-Deen Shaah ibn Muhammad Yaa-Seen Shaah ibn Muhammad Raashid Shaah ar-Raashidi al-Husaini [d. 1996] used to praise Shaikh al-Albaani and he said, ‘Shaikh al-Albaani is the Shaikh of Hadith and its reviver in this age,’ and he gifted some books to Shaikh al-Albaani, having written on them, ‘A gift to His Eminence, the Muhaddith, the Shaikh, Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah protect him.’”

Al-Imaam al-Albaani, Shaikhul-Islaam wa Imaamu Ahlis-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah fi ’Uyoon A’laam al-’Ulamaa wa Fuhool al-Udabaa, pp. 105-106.

The Muhaddith of Medinah, Al-’Abbaad, Asked About Ignorant People who Warn Against The Imaam, The Mujaddid, Al-Albaani

Questioner: What is your advice about people who slander Shaikh al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on him, and warn against him? And what should our stance towards such an individual be?

Al-’Abbaad: That is the strangest thing, the fact that Shaikh al-Albaani is warned against, that a man who served the Sunnah is warned against, someone who spent his [entire] life examining and researching the hadiths of Allaah’s Messenger ﷺ, clarifying the authentic from what is not. What a person should do is supplicate for him, praise him, and benefit from his knowledge.

And the reality is that there are two people who someone working in the [field of] hadith cannot but refer back to, i.e., al-Haafidh Ibn Hajr and Shaikh al-Albaani. The benefit from al-Haafidh Ibn Hajr in those things connected to hadith is colossal, and the benefit from Shaikh al-Albaani in those things connected to hadith is colossal [too].

For this reason it means that the one who warns against Al-Albaani is warning against becoming acquainted with the truth and accessing the Sunnah, because what Al-Albaani did in connection to hadith was a preeminent service and complete diligence in [serving] the Sunnah, facilitating access to it and bringing it closer to comprehension for the students of knowledge.

So he is worthy of being complimented and supplicated for.

The Imaam of Ahlus-Sunnah, Ibn Baaz, asked About Al-Albaani: He is not Infallible and Makes Mistakes Like all Other Scholars

Questioner: What is your Eminence’s opinion about relying on what al-Albaani has authenticated?

The Imaam of Ahlus-Sunnah, Ibn Baaz: Shaikh Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, is from the elite, from the scholars well-known for their integrity, sound ’aqidah, and diligence in authenticating hadiths and clarifying their status. He is a chief support/pillar in this regard, but he is not infallible, he may fall into a mistake in declaring some hadiths authentic or weak, just like any other scholar, every scholar is like that, having some mistakes, from the earliest scholars to those who came later.

The student of knowledge must look at what he has authenticated, or declared hasan or weak, if he is from the people of knowledge, from the people of this field, someone who knows hadiths and can take a look at their paths of narration and their narrators, such that if he finds that what the Shaikh has said is correct, then alhamdulillaah, and if not then he relies on the proofs that are clear to him which the people of knowledge in this field have followed. Because the people of knowledge established principles to authenticate hadiths and declare them weak, as for [… unclear …] the people of knowledge, he [i.e., al-Albaani] is a chief support/pillar in authenticating and declaring hadiths to be weak, because he is from the people of knowledge, he is from those who are [experts] in this field, he has studied for a long time and many years, we ask Allaah to give us and him success and a good ending.

Questioner: Ameen, O Allaah, and may Allaah reward you with good.

See here for a collection of statements that scholars made about Shaikh al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on him.

Shaikh Muqbil About al-Albaani, ‘Verily, I Am in Awe of Him.’

Host: Alhamdulillaahi-rabbil-’aalameen, wa sallallaahu ’alaa Muhammad wa ’alaa Aalihi wa sallam, as for what follows. These are questions from some of those who are our brothers for Allaah’s Sake, we present them to [him who] is our brother for Allaah’s Sake, Muqbil ibn Haadee al-Waadi’i may Allaah protect him, we hope for answers to the questions from him with proofs from the Book and the Sunnah.

The questioner says that I have heard that your Eminence has studied some of the hadiths which our Shaikh, the virtuous one, Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani made mistakes in, in [his books] As-Saheehah and Ad-Da’eefah, so what are they and could you explain the mistakes?

Muqbil: A good brother, may Allaah the Most High protect him, had requested a written answer and I did not have time to do that, a verbal answer was easier for me, so the hadiths which we hold that the Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah the Most High protect him—and he is regarded as the Imaam of his time in the science of hadith—was lenient in … and in my books and writings I resolve [and go with] what I hold to be the truth and I do not expose myself to clash with the Shaikh, may Allaah the Most High protect him—for verily, I am in awe of him—and let the one who is present [and has heard me say that I am in awe of him] inform the one who is absent [from this gathering and did not hear me say what I just did.]

But some letters came to me, a letter from [someone who is] a brother for Allaah’s Sake from Taif, where he objected against the Shaikh regarding some hadiths, and he requested that I write an introduction so I did, and a letter from al-Ahsaa from someone who is a brother for Allaah’s Sake requesting that I take a look at it and write an introduction so I did, and a letter from Egypt was sent to me, I had a look at those hadiths and I advised the good brother who wanted to scrutinise the hadiths which he held that Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah the Most High protect him, had made a mistake in, so I advised him not to be concerned about that and that if he must do so then he should have a special notebook for this topic and every time he [happens to] came across a hadith he records it therein, as for him intentionally researching [these mistakes] then it will take him his whole lifetime—because Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah the Most High protect him, is regarded as the most knowledgeable of his time in the science of hadith and he has exhausted more than fifty years of his life [in this field], so someone who is studying the hadiths he made mistakes in will have to exhaust a similar amount of time to that, or less or more.

And Shaikh Ismaa’eel al-Ansaari, may Allaah the Most High protect him, has some observations as regards the discussion concerning the forbiddance of gold for women, circular gold, and I hold that the truth [in this issue] is with Shaikh Ismaa’eel al-Ansaari, may Allaah the Most High protect him. As for knowledge of hadith—no-one can compare to Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani [in it]—nevertheless it has reached me that the Shaikh himself has taken up this issue and has written a book in which he has collected the hadiths which he had authenticated but which he then later discovered were weak or weak hadiths which he later discovered were authentic, some of my brothers for Allaah’s Sake told me about that, and I don’t know whether this book is ready for publishing, and the Muslims are in dire need of it …

… and when the Shaikh passes away, may Allaah the Most High protect him and I ask Allaah the Most Great to bless his life, you will see more criticisms, but [now] the people stand in awe of the Shaikh, and what did he do with Abu Ghuddah? And what did he do with al-Kataani? And what did he do with the Minister of Religious Endowments in Abu Dhabi who objected to him? What is correct is that he dissected him [with his answers] until the Minister of Religious Endowments [must’ve] wished he was dead if he had any life in his heart and [wished] that he had not objected to Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah the Most High protect him.

Shaikh Muqbil About The Most Knowledgeable Person in Hadith in This Time and Libraries that Do not Have His Books

The Imaam of Yemen, Muqbil ibn Haadi al-Waadi’i, may Allaah have mercy on him, said, “… and likewise hadith, the most knowledgeable person found in this time [concerning hadith] is the Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah the Most High protect him, indeed we advise all students of knowledge to get hold of his books and to benefit from them—any library that does not have the books of Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani is inadequate. So may Allaah reward him well on behalf of Islaam and the Muslims.”

Ijaabatus-Saa‘il ’alaa Ahammil-Masaa‘il, p. 559.

Shaikh Muqbil About Al-Albaani, “He had no Peer in This Era.”

The Imaam of Yemen, Muqbil ibn Haadi al-Waadi’i, said about Al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on them both, “He has no peer in this era. And it should be known that Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, may Allaah the Most High protect him, has knowledge/learning [from what he has had access to] which no one else does, and reference works became available to him which no-one else had. Many a reference is not available to us, so we have to quote it from the books of Shaikh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaani, referencing it back to him. So may Allaah reward him well on behalf of [what he has done for] Islaam.”

The Shaikh of Yemen, Muqbil ibn Haadi al-Waadi’i, on Al-Albaani’s Nine Volume Work, ‘Irwaa’ul-Ghaleel’

Questioner: What is the scholarly, fiqh benefit of [Shaikh al-Albaani’s nine volume work called] Irwaa’ul-Ghaleel?

Shaikh Muqbil: Irwaa’ul-Ghaleel is a book of fiqh and a book of jarh and ta’deel and a book of authenticating [hadiths] and declaring them to be weak, so it is regarded as one of the most precious of Shaikh al-Albaani’s books, may Allaah the Most High protect him, and the collection of paths of narration which the Shaikh brings is something which it might not be possible for someone who lives in this time to do, so it is from the most precious—and I don’t [just] say from the most precious of Shaikh al-Albaani’s books—but rather that it is one of the most precious of all books. And how numerous are the authors in this time who benefit from the books of the Shaikh, may Allaah the Most High protect him. [Shaikh Muqbil answered this question while Shaikh al-Albaani was alive, may Allaah have mercy on them both]
